Description

Bed-Stuy is one of NYC’s first age-friendly neighborhoods, having developed the Aging Improvement District (AID), an on-going project to create and support initiatives that enhance the lives of seniors. Participants in this project bring the concerns and suggestions of older adults in specific neighborhoods to local businesses, non-profit organizations, city councils, cultural, educational and religious institutions to develop strategic initiatives that positively impact the lives of older adults and people of all ages.

Bedford-Stuyvesant (Bed-Stuy) is the third, but first community-lead, Aging Improvement District (AID) in New York City. In Conjunction with the New York Academy of Medicine and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, the Coalition for the Improvement of Bed-Stuy was awarded by the Fan L. Fox and Samuels Foundation. This Coalition serves as the lead for Bedford Stuyvesant’s Aging Improvement District.

During the first year, the Coalition for the Improvement of Bed-Stuy (hereafter referred to as CIBS) convened 15 community meetings with Bed-Stuy senior groups as well as representatives from 25 organizations that provide direct service to seniors in the community. Through feedback sessions, CIBS and its partners have developed programming, initiatives and events that benefit the aging and senior population of Bed-Stuy.

During the second year, CIBS worked with its partners to incorporate the identified needs, initiatives, and programming into their workplans. The results of such collaborative work were new gardens at senior residences, cooking and financial management classes, and fitness classes, to name a few.

In our third year, the focus falls on creating and maintaining sustainability. The way that we hope to achieve this is by recruiting a core of Age- Friendly Ambassadors that will focus on two key areas: Benefit Screenings (identifying and having seniors take advantage of resources and services available to them) and Age Friendly Retail (Assessing Businesses, advocating for senior discounts and physical improvements, and making seniors aware of the discounts available to them).
