Coalition for the Improvement of Bedford-Stuyvesant (CIBS) is a member association dedicated to working to create effective collaboration among local organizations and others committed to positively impacting the Bedford Stuyvesant community. CIBS primary goals focus on maintaining and enhancing an equitable, healthy and sustainable community that produces economic and social betterment for the indigenous people of our community. CIBS and its member organizations are transforming all of Bed-Stuy into a thriving community where individuals and families can live, work, shop and play.
CIBS member networks provide services in five key areas: Business Services, Money & Homes, Environment & Housing, Jobs and Social Services.
JOBS: CIBS members help residents get jobs that can pay the bills. Designated Coalition members train and connect Bed-Stuy residents to jobs in energy conservation, healthcare, retail, and other industries.
MONEY: CIBS members assist residents to file tax returns and apply for available tax credits at no or low cost, bringing crucial dollars back to Bed-Stuy. Coalition members also enroll qualified residents in public benefits programs and provide financial education and counseling.
HOUSING: CIBS members develop affordable homes for sale and rental properties. The Coalition members help first time homebuyers purchase homes with mortgages and down payment assistance and counsels homeowners to prevent foreclosures. Coalition members also manage thousands of affordable rental units and lead the fight to keep rents in Bedford-Stuyvesant affordable.
HEALTH: CIBS organizations work to ensure your physical and mental wellbeing by offering a host of physical evaluation, exercise and counseling services. In addition, several offer emergency hotlines to call for crises such as domestic violence and drug addiction/abuse.
BUSINESS: To make shopping in Bedford-Stuyvesant a more satisfying experience, area merchants’ associations are securing funding for increased sanitation, marketing, and security services. The Coalition is also partnering with the City of New York to improve the look and feel of Fulton Street by adding more trees, benches and other amenities.
ENVIRONMENT: CIBS members work with homeowners to improve energy efficiency and reduce monthly bills by replacing windows, installing energy efficient appliances and a host of other methods. Several CIBS members also work with residents to eliminate environmental hazards such as lead contamination from homes.
