Environment & Housing

CIBS Housing and Physical Development Network aim is to create and preserve affordable housing and promote sustainable land-use development. Network members are transforming all of Bedford-Stuyvesant into a thriving community.

Promoting Energy Efficiency

One key program, run by the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation (BSRC) is the Weatherization Assistance Program which provides for Central Brooklyn. BSRC helps low-income residents reduce home maintenance costs by promoting energy efficiency. Communities across the city are struggling to manage skyrocketing fuel prices. Communities of color often struggle harder to meet rising costs because they frequently have fewer resources and older housing stock.

To ease costs, BSRC’s Weatherization Program offers services to reduce energy costs and create healthier living environments. Services include:
  • Replacing out-of-date windows
  • Installing energy efficient appliances and lighting
  • Upgrading heating systems, and
  • Providing durable  insulation and air sealing

Making Heating Bills Affordable

The housing stock in Bedford Stuyvesant is among the city’s oldest and least energy efficient therefore it is especially important to assist residents to meet rising costs. Homeowner, Stephanie Bradford owns her own home in Brooklyn and was struggling to pay rising heating bills. “These times are serious. So whatever way you have to do to save money, you have to save it. This winter was horrible. It was a matter of either heating the house or eating. And it was really a choice.” Luckily, she found and qualified for BSRC’s low-income weatherization program. As a result, Ms. Bradford installed new windows, added insulation and put in new energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs to lower her bills.

BSRC’S Weatherization Program began thirty years ago and since then it has weatherized approximately 9,200 homes throughout Central Brooklyn and completed $20 million in energy conservation measures.
